Intelligent railway transport systems include a wide range of communications based on IT solutions. As these technologies are integrated in the transport system infrastructure, they contribute to achieving an efficient monitoring and  administration of the traffic flow, traffic jam reduction, a source of alternative routes, increased productivity, and, last but not least, a more efficient time management and considerably reduced costs.

The railway transport software solutions may supply various tools for the analysis, processing, collection, communication and archives of the data pertaining to the specific features of the transport system. These data provide the transport planning staff, those in charge with both passengers and commodity transports, with accurate information about traveling patterns – thus optimizing the transport planning process.

The national project "Consolidation of the Restructuring Process for the Romanian Railways. Technical Assistance for passengers train timetable", financed by Phare funds, led to the introduction of a new concept for passengers train timetable, which has been implemented on certain routes.

The direct beneficiaries of this project have been C.N.C.F. „C.F.R” – S.A. and S.N.T.F.C. “CFR CALATORI” – S.A.

The project was won by an international consortium of companies with international experience in the sector of modern railway infrastructure, including SNCF INTERNATIONAL, SYSTRA and Luis Berger SAS. The participation of The Red Point Company in this project aimed to supply the following specific services:

• the development of several software modules, including:
• the module for automatic calculation of traveling times
• the interface module between the ROUTES systems (the train timetable planning system) and IRIS (the railway traffic control and monitoring system)
• the implementation of the software modules at central and regional levels
• training the personnel for using these software modules
